,ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS
Question 1 (50 marks)
Use learning unit 6 Teaching Writing and Presenting to HL Learners in FET to
complete this task.

Learners, in your grade 10 Home Language class, are required to write a formal letter
to the editor of a newspaper in the FET phase. Explain how you would do the following:

Question 1.1 (20 marks)
Take the learners through the writing process so that they can produce and
complete a formal letter.

(Study Guide Pg. 143)

1. Prewriting
Brainstorming and Clustering:

Ask learners to brainstorm the purpose of their letter and the key points they want to
include. Use clustering/webbing to organize ideas. Draw a circle in the center labeled
"Formal Letter." Branch out with key ideas such as "Purpose," "Recipient," "Main
Points," "Supporting Details."

Journalists' Questions:
Use the 5 Ws and 1 H to explore the topic.
Example Questions:
Who is the recipient of the letter?
What is the purpose of the letter?
Where will the letter be sent?
When is the letter being written?
Why is this letter necessary?
How will the letter achieve its purpose?

2. Drafting

Uninterrupted Writing
Encourage learners to write their first draft, focusing on content rather than mechanics.

, Guiding Questions:
What is the purpose of this letter?
Who is the audience?
What are the main points?
What details support these points?
How can the letter begin and end effectively?

3. Revising
Content and Structure Improvement:

Use the ARRR method (Adding, Rearranging, Removing, Replacing) to refine drafts.
Peer Revision: Have learners exchange letters and provide feedback using questions
like:
Are the main points clear?
Is the structure logical?
Are there any irrelevant details?

Read Around Group (RAG):
Form small groups where learners read each other's drafts and suggest improvements.

4. Editing
Mechanical Errors:
Focus on correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Provide a checklist for learners to ensure they review all aspects of their writing.
Encourage pairs or groups to proofread each other's work.

5. Publishing
Finalizing and Sharing:
Have learners create the final copy of their formal letter.
Encourage learners to read their letters aloud to the class, publish them in a class
book, or display them on a bulletin board.
