1932, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
She was a singer, actress, and civil rights activist who brought African
music to a global audience.
Makeba grew up in a musical family and began singing at an early age.
She became famous in the 1950s with the Manhattan Brothers and later joined the all-
woman group, the Skylarks.
