Answer ONE of the following two questions.

QUESTION 1: POETRY

Closely read the following poem “Farewell” by E.E. Sule and answer the
question that follows.

Tight jinxed professors gazing at the immensity of nothing!
Behold a multitude of books speeding away in escape
Pens swagger in hollowness, prostitute with cheap sheets

Afro-haired professors walking the length of the Atlantic in fury!
Bid the sun, bid the moon, bid the stars, bid the rivers
Farewell ..................

Introduction

E.E. Sule’s poem “Farewell” expresses a deep sense of rude awakening and
frustration with the state of his country after political independence, particularly
regarding the plight of intellectuals and academics. Through vivid diction,
metaphorical language, and personification, Sule captures the complex
emotions of disappointment, hopelessness, and outrage felt by educated
professionals who witness the decline of their nation. He uses these poetic
techniques to convey the sense of a nation that has failed to live up to its post-
independence promises, focusing on the forced migration of educated
individuals and the resulting intellectual void.
