Anorexia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Restriction of Energy Intake:
o Persistent restriction of energy intake leading to significantly
low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental
trajectory, and physical health.
2. Intense Fear of Gaining Weight:
o Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though
underweight.
3. Distorted Body Image:
o Disturbance in the way one's body weight or shape is
experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-
evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body
weight.
Hallmark Features:
• Significant weight loss.
• Amenorrhea in females (absence of menstruation).

• Brittle hair and nails.
• Severe food restriction.

Bulimia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Recurrent Episodes of Binge Eating:
o Eating, in a discrete period (e.g., within any 2-hour period), an
amount of food that is definitely larger than what most
individuals would eat in a similar period under similar
circumstances.
o A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.
2. Recurrent Inappropriate Compensatory Behaviors:
o Such behaviors to prevent weight gain include self-induced
vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas, or other
medications, fasting, or excessive exercise.
3. Frequency and Duration:
o The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors
both occur, on average, at least once a week for three months.
