Section A
1. Briefly Describe a Therapeutic Approach: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Introduction to CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based form of
psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and modifying dysfunctional thoughts, behaviors, and
emotional responses. CBT combines principles from both cognitive and behavioral psychology
and aims to address current problems and symptoms by teaching patients practical skills to alter
their thought patterns and behaviors.
Core Principles of CBT
1. Cognitive Model: CBT is based on the cognitive model, which posits that psychological
distress is largely a function of disturbances in cognitive processes. In other words, it is
not the situations themselves that cause distress, but how individuals interpret and think
about those situations.
2. Behavioral Component: The behavioral aspect of CBT involves identifying and
changing unhelpful behaviors. This often includes exposure techniques, behavior
modification, and skills training.
