family will be used.

Question 2
2.1 The stages of the Family Life Cycle
The Family Life Cycle is the term used to describe developmental trends within the family
over time (Gladding, (2015).The model includes all dimensions of the individual life course
but emphasizes the family as whole. Inherent in this model is tension between the person

as an individual and the family as a system. The cycle does not include all aspects of
one’s life but it emphasises some aspects of one’s life more than others. The Naidoo’s are

, in stage 5 of the Family Life Cycle, but they have to perform stages 3-5 tasks. Layisha and
Devan have been married for 11years and have three young children. Two in a school
going age and one in pre-school. Becoming and being a parent is a physical,

psychological and social event that changes married people’s way of life dramatically, yet
it is a joyous experience (Gladding 2015). The couple has to adjust their time to make
room for the children – being parents and being partners (Becvar & Becvar, 2018).

At this stage there are more tasks that demand a couple’s time, these

may include, monitoring children’s progress at schooling, how they use of leisure and work
demands. Gladding, (2015) further states that this time is the most difficult time for
mothers as they regard themselves as primary health givers. Layisha made adjustments
and now works on a fulltime capacity. In her own admission, she is sometimes
overwhelmed by her responsibilities. She enjoys her work and gets along with her

colleagues and supervisor. She has spent the rest of her time raising her children. Since
the children are grown, she wants her romantic life back. She has maintained a good
relationship with the grandparents and is extending her interactions with her colleagues.
2.2. The stages of a Marriage
The framework shows four stages of the marital relationship, the emotional issues and the

critical tasks undertaken by individuals in each stage. They are honeymoon period (0-2
yrs.), early marriage period (2-10 yrs), middle marriage period (10-25 yrs) and the longterm
marriage period(25+yrs). The Naidoo’s have been married for 11yrs; they are in the
middle marriage period. According to Becvar & Becvar, (2014), the emotional challenges
that can cause distress at this stage are post career planning, the critical tasks include

adjust to midlife changes, renegotiating the relationship and renewing the marriage
commitment. Gladding, (2015) mentions that the relational challenge is maintaining the
marital unit and the potential crises is marital dissatisfaction. Layisha was working parttime
in the family business helping her husband thus spending more time with him. She
now works full time outside home and has more work and home responsibilities. The time

they are spending together to communicate and nurture their relationship has dwindled.
