ASSESSMENT 5 FEEDBACK

Mark as done

Hi guys

Time for the next “exciting” instalment of assignment feedback – the assignment 5 feedback!!

I’m not going to spend too much time talking about the grades to be honest. Basically, because of the way the grading
guide was set up, the grades were generally pretty good with most of you getting 60% or more. In fact, if you got less than
60% you should be a bit worried! This would mean that you just didn’t follow the most basic instructions that we gave you
in terms of how much you needed to write. Which is a pretty basic error to be making at this stage! If we say we want at
least 200 words, we really mean that we want at least 200 words. We’ll actually count them!

So, the simple story in terms of grades is this: If you gave us what we asked for in terms of the quantity of writing, you
would generally have gotten 60% or more. If you didn’t, you would have gotten less than 60%. How much more or less
would have depended on the quality of your reflection, and how well you managed to bring the virtue ethics theory to bear
on your reflection.

Nuff said about grades – because actually grades are really not the most important thing that we are dealing with here!

What is important is the substance of what you guys had to say and what it all means ….. so here is my bird’s eye view of
this in two points:

First point:

I think that I can safely say that all of the teaching team, your teaching assistants and myself, really appreciated how you
guys described your current economic status. Speaking for myself specifically, some of your stories were profoundly
moving:

The young man from a rural area who gets that NSFAS scholarship (usually late because the people who get paid
comfortable salaries to administer these seem completely oblivious to the fact that these scholarships are a matter of life
and death) which covers some stuff, but not nearly everything. Perhaps most importantly, it does absolutely nothing to
relieve his gnawing worry about his aging parents and younger siblings who are back home living in miserable grinding
poverty.

The single mom struggling on a very tiny salary (like bottom 50 or 60%) to feed and cloth and educate her child(ren) ….. and
study this damned module at the same time which is so bloody unreasonable as to expect students to actually be online half
of the time.

The “middle class” guy who earns an income that puts him in the top 80-90% of income earners in the country. And yet still
just can’t afford to make ends meet at the end of the month. He’s drowning in debt, and if not that, in Black tax. “How the hell
is it possible that I am in the top 10% – 20% of income earners in this country?” he asks in utter disbelief.

So let me quickly tell you my location because it will help with the rest of my feedback...
