2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES
2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to equip you with insight into basic concepts in the study of
development.
2.2 Outcomes
After completing this module, you should be able to
understand key concepts related to debates on development in developing countries
(countries of the Global South)
define sustainable development and discuss factors that could influence it
explain the meaning of basic needs and discuss their link to development
discuss the link between human rights, justice and development
discuss the scale and causes of poverty and inequality in developing countries (countries
of the Global South)
