Exclusion persists despite the adoption of inclusive education for a variety of
reasons. These can often be attributed to experiences of power, equity, inclusion,
and social difference as well as the ability of teachers to effectively implement
inclusive education.
My understanding of inclusive education has been heavily influenced by my
personal experiences with power, equity, inclusion, and social difference.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by individuals who were
marginalized and excluded from mainstream education. I saw students with
disabilities being placed in separate classrooms or schools, away from their peers.
I saw students from lower-income families struggling to keep up with their peers
due to a lack of resources and support. I also saw students from minority ethnic
or cultural backgrounds facing discrimination and prejudice in educational
