EMA1501 Assignment 3 (DETAILED ANSWERS) 2024 - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED Answers, guidelines, workings and references ...... Question 1 The mathematical field of geometry is made up of concepts relating to space and shape – that is why, in the Foundation Phase curriculum, geometry is often simply referred to as Space and Shape. 1.1. Explain the importance of shape and space in emergent mathematics. 1.2. Discuss the role of visual, verbal, movement/kinesthetic and tactile skills in learning shape and space. 1.3. Differentiate between the concepts: position and direction. Provide an example of your own for each concept. 1.4. Design an obstacle course you could set out for grade R learners. Write down at least 5 instructions for the learners. (10) The instructions should use position and direction words. Mention the materials you are going to use to design the obstacle course. 1.5. Sketch a simple map for your obstacle course. Ensure that it could be followed by children who are not yet reading in the formal sense. Think how you could use color and shape as well as arrows to make your map clear Question 2 Measurement is the process of associating numbers with physical quantities and phenomena. When teaching children measurement it is not enogh to teach the method of measuring, the children need to understand the concept well. 2.1. Analyze the stages during which the concept of measurement is developed. Do you agree or disagree with the statement above? In a paragraph of 4 to 5 lines or about 60 words, justify your answer. 2.3. Capacity and volume are not the same. Capacity refers to how much the container can hold and volume is the space that is occupied. This might sound confusing for children. As a teacher, demonstrate how you would simplify the two concepts in your teaching and explain which terminology-(three for each) you would apply when teaching your learners these concepts in the Foundation Phase. 2.4. Time is naturally more challenging for children to understand than other forms of measurement. Time cannot be seen or touched like the other concepts. Use the simplified lesson plan template to plan a mock lesson where you will use the DAILY PROGRAMME displayed in the classroom, to teach the concept of time. In your mock lesson plan, include pictures (in the space provided at the bottom of the template) to show the sequence of events as they happen every day.
