1 IDENTIFY AND DISCUSS THE FACTORS THAT A TEACHER SHOULD TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN
CHOOSING A METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
➢ The learning outcomes: what is the aim of the lesson? It is to reveal new information, apply the
theory in practice or revise completed work.
➢ The learners needs: if the learner does not understands the work that has already been
explained, a teaching method must be chosen that provides opportunities for asking questions
so that any obscurities and problem can be cleared up
➢ The subject contents: some subject contents are more practical while others are more theatrical.
When a section of the subject is extremely practical, it is preferable to choose a method in which
demonstration and examples explain the subject contents
➢ Learner’s talents and gift: learners who are less gifted have difficulty learning, hence the need
for adequate illustrations, demonstrations, learner involvement and repetition. More gifted
learners learn more quickly and are able to concentrate for longer periods. A teacher should
therefore choose methods that allow the learner to perform according to his or her abilities.
➢ The competence of the teacher: the teacher will know his or her own abilities and shortcomings.
For example, teacher who is not computer literate should not use computer teaching methods.
A teacher with speech problem should avoid using the lecture method.
➢ Availability of instruction media: it is important for a teacher to use the instruction media that
are available
