“Do the right thing - Deontology” – here we want you to think about what
Kant might have said about Gekko's speech (Hint: you might want to go and
look at what you wrote in Assignment 02):
In Assignment 2 I believed that Whitey Basson earned his millions but from
Kant’s point of view maybe not. Because we all work hard, yet we all don’t
earn as much. And many of us have worked ourselves up, studied hard yet still
no millions…..
Kant's theory is an example of a deontological moral theory–according to these
theories, the rightness or wrongness of actions does not depend on their
consequences but on whether they fulfil our duty. Deontology states we are
morally obliged to act in accordance with certain sets of principles and rules
regardless of the outcome. Gekko’s speech justifies greed when he says ‘greed
is right” and also “greed works’. According to Kant’s theory we are morally
