QUESTION 1
Read the given passage below and indicate whether Ms. Optimism acted
professionally or not. Give three reasons to support your stance.
A professional teacher should possess qualities and competencies that drive effective
teaching and learning, facilitate transformation in the learning environment, and
recognize the learner's potential for success. The teacher's role is to support the learner
in reaching their fullest potential. Ms. Optimism demonstrated these qualities and
competencies in this scenario.
Ms. Optimism acted professionally as she exhibited the following characteristics of
professional teacher among others:
1) Collaborative and Networked,
Ms. Optimism turned to the community and other teachers for assistance in her
teaching. Opening her instructional planning to new ideas and input from
colleagues and community improved students' experiences in the classroom.
Working with other educators to meet common goals shows her commitment to a
successful learning community. When teachers engage in this collaborative
culture, they share best practices, develop interdisciplinary projects, and
contribute to professional learning communities, leading to more innovative
teaching strategies and cohesive learning environments.
2) Adaptive and Flexible
Ms. Optimism was comfortable teaching in a dual medium instruction and
proficient in both languages English and Afrikaans. But in 1987 the
demographics of learners stated shifting disrupting Ms. Optimism goal of meeting

every need of the students due to lack of language proficiency of the other eight
languages that had mash-roomed. Consequently she turned to the community
and other teachers for assistance in her teaching.
An adaptive teacher is able to recognize and respond to the different needs and
backgrounds of their students, adjusting their approach to maximize learning for
all. Adaptive teachers, as Madda et al. (2011) contend, engage in “an
orchestration…a curricular dance (more like a ballet) [adaptive teachers]
responsive teach…and with the slightest change in the instructional ecology of
the classroom, change their position in order to support student learning”
3) Innovative and Creative,
Her initiative made all the learners feel welcomed and valued in the school and
the community. She tackled growing inequality in the school. Through her tireless
initiative the school moved away from a dual medium to a parallel medium
thereby adapting to prevailing circumstances.
Innovative teaching, as Zhu et al (2013) confirm, “is a necessity for all teachers in
order to meet the educational needs of the new generations.” Creativity in
teaching also means finding new ways to engage students, make learning fun,
and stimulate students’ curiosity and imagination.
4) Inclusive and Empathetic
Ms. Optimism always wanted to cover the needs of every learner in her
classroom. She felt there was lack of equity in the resources provided for the
learners in the school. Ms. Optimism wanted to support the learners the best she
could.
Modern educators are characterized by their commitment to inclusivity and
empathy. Inclusive teaching encompasses providing equal access to learning
opportunities for all students, regardless of their background, abilities, or
challenges, while also ensuring they feel supported and valued in the classroom
