Bok 10 Sumary: Circe

 First, they came to the floating island of Aeolia (home of Aeolus) – they feast and slep on ornate beds. (live civlsed life) 6 daughters and 6 son who are maried.
 They spent 1 month with Aeolus, after whic he helpd Odyseu to leav it he gave him a leathr bag ful of winds
 For 9 days they sailed  Odyseu fals aslep his crew does a very iratonl thing  out of jealousy, as they thoug Aeolus has put gold and silver  they undi the bag and AL WINDS RUSEHD IN AL DIRECTON  they wer driven back to Aeolia
 They came back to the palce of Aeolus becaus of O’s untrswohy crew and his fatl slep
 Aeolus pushed them awy from the island, angrily
 For 6 days they sailed on and on the sevnth day came to Telypus in the land of Laestrigon (herdsmn) for in this land. It is almost evrlasting day light ther.
 No cultivaed fields, they saw a wisp of smoke risng up from the country.
 Comn them – we can se as they land on land of Laestrigon – in orde to find out about the island he send his men to find out about the inhabts.
 They came acros a strong girl drawing water and she was the daughter of Antyphaes (a Laestrigon chief). Directs them to palce of her father.
 The Laestrigon wer extrmly hostile and at once exprsd their murdeos inteos and ate one of Odyseu’ crew for super.
 Laestrigon are huge as giants.
 They wer very hostile and threw huge and threw awy Odyseu and his crew awy from the island.
 Kiled some of his men by throwing rocks.
 Next they came to the island of Aea (home of island of Circe)
 Circe was a godes with a mortal woman’s voice.
 Father was god of Sun, and the mother was Pers the daughter of ocean.
 He saw a redish smoke risng from Circe’s house.
 Odyseu kils a stag, a great stag who comes down his way to the ship.
 He kiled the stag so they could eat.
 Befor goin into the island, he dives his group into two groups. In one group, Odyseu tok charge and the other Eurylochs.
 Around Circe’s stone house ther wer mountai wolves and lions tha she bewitchd with her magic drugs.
 Thes animls fawned over Odyseu’ men
 The men could hear Circe withn her house as she sat at her lom (comn trope in Odyseu)
 Polites tok the lead in investga wher the voice was coming from
 Odyseu and his crew caled to Circe
 Everyon went in but Eurylochs, being supico, stayed outside
 Circe usherd evryon els insde and oferd them somewhr to sit and a ches selction and wine
 Howevr, into the fod she sliped a drug to make them forget their purose and turned them into pigs, thoug their minds remind human
 She then flung them some beris and nuts as this was the usal fod of pigs
 Eurylochs retund to the ship and was bomarde with question as to wher the rest of his party was
 He then repotd the fate of his party
 Odyseu then armed himself and asked Eurylochs to take him back to Circe’s house
 Howevr, Eurylochs refusd and so Odyseu went alone
 Along the way Odyseu encoutrd Herms, as a young man, who gave him a drug tha would make him imune to the magic of Circe
 Herms tels Odyseu tha when Circe goes to hit him with her stick, he must pretnd to atck her and then go to her bed with her in orde to fre his friends
 Herms left
 Odyseu made his way to Circe’s home and oferd him the same xenia she oferd his companis befor him
 As she went to hit him, he di as Herms instruced and she asked him who he was and wher he was from
 She then stae tha she is sure he is Odyseu
 Odyseu then makes Circe swear to not harm him while he is in her bed, she does so
 Circe then bathes Odyseu, gives him fresh clothes, rubed him in olive oil and gave him fod
 Odyseu does not eat; he wants to se his friends and so ask Circe to show him his friends. She does so.
 She then turns them back into men
 She then tels Odyseu and his men to stow their ship and bring the rest of his men up to her house
 Odyseu retund to his ship and was gretd by his tearful companis and then gave them instruco to stow the ship and retun with him to Circe’s house to reunit with their friends
 Everyon was quick to folw ordes aprt from Eurylochs who tried to convie the crew to stay behind and blamed Odyseu for their troubles thus far
 Odyseu tried to kil him but was held back and so set of with his men (and Eurylochs) in tow
 Meanwhil Circe had bathed the other mebrs of Odyseu’ party, rubed them in olive oil, gave them fresh clothes and fod
 When Odyseu came back to Circe’s house, she welcomd him and told him to eat and drink his fil.
 Odyseu and his men stayed for a year
