What is your view on the censorship of children’s literature? In your reflection, consider the
following:
• Why would censorship of children’s literacy be necessary?
Censorship of children's literature is a highly debated topic, with valid arguments on both sides. On
one hand, censorship may be deemed necessary to protect young readers from potentially harmful
and inappropriate content. Certain themes or imagery, such as violence, sexuality, or drug use, may
not be suitable for the young, impressionable minds of children. In such cases, censorship helps
ensure that children are not exposed to material that could be psychologically damaging or morally
corrupting.
Additionally, censorship may also be seen as a way to uphold the values and beliefs of a specific
community or culture. Certain books may contain content that is contrary to the moral or ethical
standards of a particular group, and censorship serves as a means of upholding those standards.
On the other hand, some argue that censorship of children's literature restricts freedom of
expression and limits access to diverse perspectives and experiences. By shielding children from
challenging or controversial topics, they may be deprived of the opportunity to develop critical
thinking skills and empathy for others. Moreover, censorship could be seen as a form of control over
what children are allowed to read, potentially hindering their intellectual and emotional growth.
In my own view, I believe that censorship of children's literature should be approached with caution.
While it is important to protect children from harmful or inappropriate content, it is equally
important to offer them a wide range of literature that reflects the complexity of the world. Rather
than outright censorship, I believe in the importance of parental guidance and age-appropriate
recommendations. Parents and educators should be actively involved in guiding children's reading
choices and discussing the themes and content of the books they encounter. Ultimately, a balanced
approach that combines protection and freedom is necessary to ensure that children have access to
literature that is both age-appropriate and enriching.
• When does censorship of children’s literature becomes an extreme and undesired form of control?
Censorship of children's literature can be a complex and contentious issue. On one hand, the
intention behind censoring certain content in children's literature can be to protect young readers
from potentially harmful or inappropriate material. This can include topics such as violence, sexual
content, or offensive language.
