, Question 1:
1.1 If you were part of the above conversation, what would have been your opinion
regarding the role of the home language? Provide evidence to support your
answer.
If I was part in the conversation mentioned, my answer would have been yes. Yes,
home language has an influence in the acquisition of a first additional language.
The reason therefore is that learners learn efficiently when they connect new
concepts and vocabulary to previous knowledge and experiences. According to (Prof
MM Nieman, Dr S Mukhari 2023) one can never neglect a learner’s home language as
it is important that the learner’s home language continues to be used and developed
while learning a second language. If their home language is continuously used and
developed properly will however, influence their cognitive development as well as
the quality of the second language in a positive way. Learners who are not fluent in
their first language will most probably struggle in the acquisition of a first additional
language. Learners’ home language is a foundation for learning new languages
because when learners value and acknowledge their home language teachers can
make it possible for learners to transfer their current language skills to the first
additional language being taught.
Arola, 2017, states that the stronger the learner’s mother tongue, the easier it will be
for them to learn new languages. Learners who have a solid foundation in their home
language, develop better literacy skills, also in other languages they learn. Learners
being multilingual or bilingual encourages cognitive abilities such like critical thinking,
problem solving skills and creativity. This will have a positive impact on their
academic success.
