Question 1
1.1 Define one of the theoretical assumptions of communication, as discussed
in Learning Unit 1, and provide a brief explanation. (5)
1.2 Compare and contrast Bandura’s social learning theory with Piaget’s
theory of cognitive development in terms of their views on how individuals
learn and develop. (10)
1.3 Analyse the implications of Skinner's behaviorism theory in shaping
teaching methodologies and classroom management strategies. How can
educators apply the principles of reinforcement to optimise student learning?
(20)
Answer 1: Theoretical Assumptions of Communication, Learning, and
Development
1.1 Theoretical Assumption of Communication
One key assumption of communication is that it's a symbolic process. This means
that people use symbols (words, gestures, signs, etc.) to create and share meaning.
These symbols don't have inherent meaning; their significance is derived from
shared understanding and cultural context. Effective communication relies on the
ability to encode (translate thoughts into symbols) and decode (interpret symbols
into meaning).
1.2 Social Learning vs. Cognitive Development
Similarities:
• Both Bandura's social learning theory and Piaget's theory of cognitive
development acknowledge the role of experience in shaping learning.
• They recognize that learners are not passive recipients of information, but
actively involved in the learning process.
Differences:
• Focus: Social learning theory emphasizes observational learning and the
influence of social interaction. Children learn by watching and imitating
others, and their behavior is shaped by rewards and punishments observed in
