Tabulated below are the different Southern Afrotemperate Forest types in South Africa and their
respective areal extents (arbitrary) of Forest biome. Human activities, urbanization in particular,
influence vegetation changes in this biome which is currently estimated to have an area of 350.57 km2
Species % Area (km2) Area (km2) after 8 years
Outeniqua yellowwood (Podocarpus falcatus) 25 87.64
Real yellowwood (Podocarpus latifolius) 6 21.03
Breede River Yellowwood (Podocarpus elongatus) 3 10.52
Black stinkwood (Ocotea bullata) 60 210.34
Forest tree fern (Cyathea capensis) 4 14.02
Common tree fern (Cyathea dregei) 2 7.01
100 350.57
1 Use the above information to calculate the following:
(i) Areal extent of vegetation cover after 8 years if urban encroachment replaces vegetation
cover at a rate of 2km2 per every 4 years. (show your workings and complete the table) [6
marks]
(ii) Total percentage of Southern Afrotemperate Forest remaining after 8 years [4 marks]
**Round off to two decimal places**
