Aims
 Purpose principles and characteristic of an effective Team
 Define what a team is and what an effective team is

How would you define a team?
 People working together collaboratively – working towards a common goal
 A team is something which comprises of two or more people
 John Maxwell ‘team works makes the dream work’

What is the purpose of an effective team?
 To complete something together
 Drawing on individual strength to make the collective better
 Humans are by nature social creatures – working together can therefore tie into this
 To distribute the work in a fair and equitable manner whilst also recognising where
someone has a particular strength
 Problem solving
 Cooperation and collaboration
 To improve the care of the patient (safety) and organisational aspect
 Can improve job satisfaction
o Boosts morale
o Support in the workplace
o Sensing of belonging
o Sharing of best practice
o Greater role clarity – what is expected of you and how to achieve it

 What happens if the team isn’t effective?

o Michael West = 2010 found 90% of NHS staff worked in a team however his
study in 2013 revealed that only 40% of team reported worked in what we
would regard as team (working closely together supporting each other;
reflecting on events together)
