ENG1501 ASSIGNMENT 1 2024 POETRY

SECTION A: REFLECTIVE ESSAY (4 different essays provided)

Studying Unit 2 on Poetry has been an insightful and enjoyable experience for me.
It has given me a deeper understanding of the techniques and elements used in
poetry and has also allowed me to reflect on the significance of poems in society.
Poetry is a means of artistic expression that resonates with me on a personal level.
I appreciate the creativity and imagination that poets use to convey their thoughts
and emotions. Poems have the power to evoke strong emotions and provoke deep
introspection. I believe that poems do matter in society because they provide a
platform for individuals to express themselves, share their stories, and reflect on
the world around them. While I don't have a specific favorite poem, I do enjoy
reading the works of Maya Angelou, particularly "Still I Rise" and "Phenomenal
Woman."

The section on Diction and the discussion about the use of specific words in a poem
was particularly enjoyable and interesting for me. It helped me understand how
word choice contributes to the overall meaning and impact of a poem. The insight
into how poets use language in a specific way to convey their intended message
was eye-opening. Additionally, the section on Imagery was fascinating as it showed
me how poets use vivid descriptions to create powerful mental images for the
reader. The analysis of specific poems, such as "Whales" by Kelwyn Sole, provided
practical examples of these concepts and deepened my appreciation for the art of
poetry.

The section that I found most challenging was the discussion on Form and different
rhyme schemes used in poetry. Understanding the intricacies of Petrarchan and
Shakespearean sonnets, as well as other formal forms of poetry, was a bit difficult

, to grasp initially. It required a closer examination and further study to fully
comprehend the nuances of these structures. Additionally, the concept of
Enjambment and its effect on poetry rhythm was also a bit challenging to
understand at first.

In conclusion, studying poetry in Unit 2 has been an enriching and thoughtprovoking
experience. It has given me a greater appreciation for the art of poetry and a deeper
understanding of the literary elements and techniques used in thisgenre. I look forward to further
exploring the world of poetry and continuing to uncover the beauty and depth of this art form.

Studying poetry in this section of the work has been a thought-provoking and
insightful experience for me. It has allowed me to reflect on my own understanding
and appreciation of poetry, and has provided me with a deeper understanding of
the literary elements and devices used in poetry.

Poetry has always held a special place in my heart. It is a form of expression that
allows for creativity and imagination, and I truly enjoy the way poets use language
to bring their ideas and emotions to life. Poems matter in society because they have
the power to evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, and provide a unique perspective
on a wide range of topics. One of my favorite poems is "The Road Not Taken" by
Robert Frost. The poem's exploration of decision-making and the unknown future
resonates with me, and I find the imagery and symbolism to be deeply meaningful.

One section of this unit that I found particularly enjoyable and insightful was the
discussion on diction and how the choice of words can impact the meaning and
tone of a poem. The analysis of the poem "Whales" by Kelwyn Sole provided a
