(First Wave) Feminism

feminism -a MOVEMENT to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression movement -a group of people acting with some degree of organization and continuity outside of institutional channels for the purpose of promoting change in the group, society, or the world sexism -attitudes, actions, and institutional practices that lower women because of their gender oppression -to be caught among forces and barriers that jointly restrain, restrict, or prevent motion or mobility (i.e. birdcage example) patriarchy -rule of men over women as a social group AND a system based on sexual hierarchy with men on top suffrage -the right to vote 1st wave feminism (1830s-1960s) -focused on abolition and women's rights, specifically: VOTING, healthcare, property, and marriage relationships 2nd wave feminism (1960s-1980s) -focused on anti-discrimination (at work and school), sexuality, family, reproductive rights, domestic violence, and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). paralleled the civil rights movement 3rd wave feminism (1990-present) -focuses on sexual harassment, reclaiming derogatory terms, intersectionality, body image, reproductive rights (abortion, maternity leave, etc.), and the glass ceiling. lacks a solid goal
