1. Bilingualism (3)
Bilingualism refers to the ability to speak two languages fuently. It sometmes refers to the
ability to speak, read and write two languages fuently. Generally this occurs when someone
has grown up using both languages in a natural communicatie setng. Ofen, a person will
faiour and be more fuent in one language than the other.
2. Additive Bilingualism (3)
Additie bilingualism occurs when there is conceptual interdependence between the two
languages that a person speaks and understands fuently. This means that they can learn a
concept in one language and understand it in another. They are also meta-linguistcally
aware and haie the adiantage oier monolinguistc children in that they can refect on the
structure and functon of language. This usually giies them an academic adiantage and
proiides them with a broader perspectie.
3. Dominant Bilingualism (3)
In dominant bilingualism, the learner speaks and writes more fuently in one language than
the other. There is no academic adiantage or disadiantage.
4. Subtractive Bilingualism (3)
Subtractie bilingualism e&erts a negatie efect on academic achieiement. It occurs when a
learner haie not deieloped their home language to an appropriate degree and can
therefore not transfer the learning and skills necessary to the second language. The learner
may stll be able to conierse in both languages.
5. Dialects (3)
A dialect is a iersion or iariaton of a language that is specifc to a region or area. It may
include diferences in pronunciaton, grammar, or the meaning and use of words and
phrases. People who share a dialect ofen share other aspects such as ethnic or regional
culture and heritage.
