Question 1
1.1 After cytokinesis, the new cells formed lack a complete cell wall. In order to form a
new cell wall, complex biochemical processes take place in plant cells. At the end of
cytokinesis, the two daughter cells are surrounded by a cell membrane and a middle
lamella, but a new cell wall needs to be formed to provide structural support and protection
to the cells.
The formation of a new cell wall involves several steps. The first step is the synthesis of
cellulose microfibrils. Cellulose is a major component of the cell wall and is synthesized
by enzyme complexes called cellulose synthase complexes. These complexes are
embedded in the plasma membrane and produce cellulose microfibrils by catalyzing the
polymerization of glucose molecules.
