2. Role of Language of Teaching and Learning (LOTL)



Language is an inseparable part of culture and includes non-verbal communicaton

Culture defnes our world-vie w, value system, and language and thought process



Language and Learning



 Learnings ability to think and learn depends on their ability to use and understand language
 Language and learning interdependent where language = means of access to all study
material
 Each subject has o wn vocabulary and terminology (used in specifc ways)
 Classroom talk, sharing, comparing, arguing, refecton = important classroom actvites to
promote common understand in language used in class.



Body Language

 Body language must convey best and positve messages to learners
 Make eye contact with learners (don’t stare)
 Move closer to learners (behind desk = barrier)
 Be a ware of personal space (difers bet ween cultures)
 Move closer when ofering praise to reinforce sincerity
 Be a ware of learner body language

Use of Additonal Language as LOTL

If teacher s witches to home language to explain difcult concepts, learner partcipates more actvely.
Progress made in learner LOTL improves learning in all subjects

Relatonship bet ween HLL and Additonal Language

 HLome language = fundamental to thinking, learning, identty
 If home language established and maintained, kno wledge of language can be used by learner to
learn additonal language
 Language developed by social interactons (parameters family and culture)
 Concepts of size, colour, cause and efectve, appropriate social conduct and skills learnt in home
language before going to school
 Additonal language skills build on original home language concepts
 If learner understands concept in HLL then just needs vocabulary to explain it in another language
(doesn’t need to relearn it)
