Course Rationale:

Syllabus
I have chosen the multi-syllabus lesson plan as this approach will ensure that the student’s
lesson aims are met in a fun and varied manner. By using the multi-syllabus lesson plans,
we can focus on the student’s chosen topics and the skills that he would like to improve on.
Authentic materials are used in this lesson to keep the student interested throughout the
lessons.

Topics
As per the interview, the student is interested in Technology, Engineering, Science, English
films, current affairs, and the environment. Each lesson is based around one or more of
these topics. The lessons are topic based and will centre around these topics.

Target language
The student mentioned in the interview that he would like to focus on improving his
pronunciation, listening and communication skills, as he spent eight years focusing on
grammar. I mainly adapted the lesson activities around these skills and not grammar or
vocabulary.

Structure
The student also enjoys some humour in his lesson plans, and I therefore included a funny
video to bring a bit of a fun element into the lessons. The topics of the lessons are based
around the student’s interests.

Hour 1: Needs analysis - Speaking, listening and pronunciation: Informal speaking.
The first hour of the course I will focus on a needs analysis of the student’s speaking and
listening skills. I will initiate a casual chat to create a comfortable atmosphere for the
student, and to identify his strengths and weaknesses during the one-to-one conversations.
The chat will include topics such as the student’s family, friends, and hobbies. This stage
allows me to adapt the syllabus accordingly with concern for his ability to utilize these skills.
The student will receive a feedback form to discuss the most effective method of providing
feedback throughout the duration of the course.

Hour 2: Technical vocabulary Speaking: Pronunciation of lexical resources
This lesson is focused on the student’s vocabulary and pronunciation skills. The student
states that he is an industrial engineer, as this is the specific topic that will be covered in
this lesson. The learning is oriented on the student’s technical background and profession.
The student also enjoys English films and comedy; therefore, the lesson includes a
humorous and interesting video that are from the industrial engineering field. As a warmer,
a short video about industrial engineering will be presented. After the video, I will ask the
student about his perspective of the event in the video. Warm-up questions will be asked

pg. 3 lesson plan 150823

, about the video’s relation to industrial engineering. I will then present a video containing
flashcards of industrial engineering vocabulary. The flashcards are double sided, one side
English, and one side Spanish. Whichever side I show to the student, he will have to provide
the correct translation of the word. This video will ensure that the student becomes more
familiar with industrial engineering terminology. I will focus on the words that the student
cannot pronounce, the phonetic chart will be used. The student will also be guided through
repetition and drilling until he is comfortable with the vocabulary. Online pronunciation
tools may be utilized for further assistance.

Hour 3: Intermediate speaking and listening skills: Listening: Gist and specific
information
This lesson will focus on the student’s speaking and listening ability. I will initiate small talk
about the student’s interests, such as films, technology, and science. I will highlight the
differences between formal and informal speech by using the conversation about films,
technology, and science. Introduction: The student will watch the YouTube video “Who was
Henry Ford” and have a question-and-answer session about the content of the video. The
teacher will ask the student’s opinions on the statements made in the video clip. Listening
for gist: The student will watch the video again and answer a questionnaire relating to the
video. Listening for other information: the student will need to complete a descriptive text
activity after watching the video, to determine how much information he could extract
from the video clip. I will review the questionnaire and descriptive and provide feedback.

Hour 4: Speaking: Pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency
This lesson is based on activities and topics that will come in handy in the student’s future.
The student like to use authentic material, therefore I asked the student to bring an
example of a job position that he might be interested in for his previous homework task.
Listening for gist: I chose an industrial engineering interview questions and answers
YouTube video, whereby the student must listen and write down five of the interview
questions asked. Listening for specific information: The student must watch the video again
and complete a worksheet where he must choose the correct option. Roleplay: I will
interview the student on the questions from the YouTube video.

Hour 5: Conversation and listening
This lesson is a fun topic namely travelling. I chose a brochure from Paris as authentic
material about the tourist attractions which was used for listening activities. Listening for
gist: I will read the “Top things to do” from the brochure and I will ask the student where
this city is and why. Listening for specific information: I will read the brochure again and
give the student a worksheet to complete. Roleplay: I will pretend that I am someone that
wants to travel to Spain. The student will describe the top attractions in Spain and answer
any questions I ask.

At the end of each lesson, I set time aside to review the lesson with the student. I will praise
him for his progress and advise on corrections that need to be done. I will give the student
homework which will be incorporated into the next lesson.

This multi-syllabus course will keep lessons varied and interesting. This course will have
covered activities that will help the student improve his listening, reading, and speaking
