Unit 5
P.1: Explain the importance of equality and diversity for individuals with different needs.
In this assignment, I will be explaining what the definition of equality and diversity mean as well as
the importance of equality and diversity for Tremaine and Valarie. I will then go onto describe the
different types of discrimination and explain why it is important to prevent discrimination for
Tremaine and Valarie.

Equality is to treat people according to their needs and to ensure that everyone has the same sort of
opportunities regardless of here abilities. An example of this could be that- if there is two people
who want to read however the one who is blind and the other isn’t - the blind one can have a paper
with in a different format (braille paper) and the other can have a paper without the format, thus
giving them both a chance to read regardless of the blind persons abilities, Diversity is to accept the
difference between all humans and to treat people's beliefs culture and lifestyle with respect. A way
how diversity can be demonstrated is if a Sikh male is wearing a turban in a nursing home- the home
must respect that the male wears it as part of his religion and therefore, cannot discriminate or let it
affect the care he receives. Discriminate is to project an unjust or prejudiced attitude towards
individuals that are different especially because of their age, race or ethnicity. An example of this is
having a group of people gang up on you because you are different to them in various ways- they
can say you're not allowed to play their game because you are too old.

Why is equality and diversity important to Tremaine and Valarie?

Equality is important to Tremaine as he is a 54-year-old man with autism. From this we can see he
has a disability, which expresses the importance of equality for Tremaine as he should get the same
opportunities laid for other people regardless of his disability- if he was treated any different, it
would be discrimination against and it would have an impact on him mentally as he is unaware that
it's his autism that makes him different and will have self-esteem issues. Due to his Autism, he has
outbursts of temper, which further expresses the importance of equality for him as he isn't aware
that it is his autism making him act out. By promoting equality, he won't feel any different from
other people. The equality Act pledged in 2010 also supports Tremaine as if prohibits any
discrimination on people with disabilities and various other characteristics. An example of the
Equality Act is age and it states that we must not discriminate anyone because of their age and
should have the same opportunities as someone who is off a different age. This correlates to
Tremaine as he is 54 and he should still be allowed a job the same way a 25-year-old would be due
to equality. Another example of the Equality Act is race and it states how you must not be
discriminated against because of your race. This correlates to Tremaine and how he should be
treated with the same care as a white male would’ve received if they both were in hospital.

Diversity is important for Tremaine as he is a 54-year-old man with Autism and a wheat allergy. From
the allergy we can see he is only allowed to eat gluten free food to avoid being sick or ill, which
expresses the important of diversity as regardless of him having an allergy he shouldn't be
discriminated or treated any other different. This means that all shops should have a gluten free
option for Tremaine as if they didn’t serve a gluten free option it could be seen as discriminating
against those with a wheat allergy. However, due to his autism he might need help in understanding
what food is wrong for him at which shows his differences but by being diverse, it can be accepted
and not looked down on. By being diverse and having gluten free foods, Tremaine will feel more
accepted in society and his physical health will improve as he won't be falling sick anymore. Aswell
