ASSIGNMENT 2-CASE STUDY
1. During my teaching practice I served relief to a grade 4 class since my mentor teacher was
absent. Just as the bell rang for break to be over I made my way to the class when a student
came to inform me two boys from that class had an argument and were now fighting.
Separate the 2 boys and speak to them individually.
Try to understand what the problem/misunderstanding is.
Find out from students whom were around at the time what they saw and understand.
Speak to both students together and help them understand that physical acts should not be
the solution to an argument.
Precautions:
Aggressive behaviour is unacceptable.
Rules should be reinforced.
Encourage students to inform a nearby teacher immediately when they see physical conflict.
The student should not take it upon themselves to stop the fight; they could get hurt.
Try to identify any patterns with the students. When aggressive incidents occur, teachers
should take note of when they occurred, what was going on at the time, who was involved
and how the students reacted. This kind of behaviour assessment might help the teacher in
the future.
Teach student conflict resolution skills;
Children will resort to aggressive behaviour because they lack the skills and words to solve
problems in a non-physical way. Help them learn to resolve matters by teaching them the
importance to talking it out in a calm manner; allowing the involved students to voice their
opinions on the matter without being interrupted and judged. Allow students to do
alternate activities to let out their frustrations. Connect with the students and gain their
trust.
