ASSIGNMENT 4
Teacher has a positive attitude in the morning. Learners are restless and take a few minutes
to settle down. They take out the essential materials. My mentor teacher always had her
lesson plans prepared and was ready to get started with the lesson. As soon she enters the
class she makes sure textbooks where passed out and learners had the necessary materials
out. Objectives and aims for the lessons are the ability for pupils to read and understand
how map keys are used and also the purpose of them.
The lesson begins by recapping notes from the previous lesson before moving onto new
content. She reads and explains what the section covers. There is a small map with different
symbols and a key stating what the symbols are. Also she explains new words and content
to previous work. They are shown the map and to find out what the symbols mean. When
learners confuse symbols teacher explains again. Learners are all focused on the lesson. The
teacher then explains by giving examples of the new words. Difficult words are written on
the board. Small diagrams are drawn to explain concepts. There is a discussion between
students and teacher about the topic. Learners are then given an activity to do and are given
permission to work with the person next to them. Students are given time to complete
activity. Teacher is walking around the class to see if students are completing their work and
discussing only the given work. She is also checking to see if anyone is having a hard time
understanding. Learners swapped books and mark their partners work as teacher makes
students call out answers. Once activity is marked teacher gives another activity as
homework and uses last few minutes going over the lesson.
The school is big and has an assembly area and a big ground for sports activities. Each class
has around 40 students. Majority of learners are Zulu speaking and come from rural areas.
The kitchen is where the helpers cook for students since some students travel from far areas
and majority come from under privileged backgrounds. They ensure that all students have a
chance to eat.
In this lesson the teacher uses the combination of visual and auditory learning styles. She
supports the text with diagrams and imagery. Auditory styles included discussion with the
class and allowing students to work in peer groups. Notes and activities are given to
students and humour is added to the lesson.
