ASSIGNMENT 3
Barriers to learning in schools or any other learning environment
There is a complex and dynamic relationship between the learners and the learning centre.
Facilitators and teachers need to recognize the different obstacles that stand in the way of
pupils experiencing a good education. Teachers should understand their student
backgrounds, learning in another language that is not the home language and planning
activities and assessment for learners. All learners should participate in the learning
program.
Learners came from rural areas have to travel far out to reach learning centres and due to
the inadequate transport facilities they are unable to travel far out. Poverty is a major
hazard. Rural areas have poor health care facilities and medication so if a student had to
become ill they would have to take leave from school and lose out on schoolwork. The lack
of other services such as communication also hinders the learning process.
Socio economic barriers such as the lack of learning centres do not cater for the large
amount of the population growth. Factors such as discrimination were formed during the
apartheid era which resulted in a cultural barrier. People of different races were unable to
interact due to racism. The majority of the population were non-whites whom received a
poor quality education and resources. Diversity arises from many factors such as gender,
race, religion, etc. It is important to understand how to respect the different ethnic groups.
Addressing learner barriers to learning and development is reliant on an understanding of
the strengths and weaknesses of different learners and of the preparation within the
environment. The negative attitudes and the stereotyping of learner’s differences due to
poor knowledge as well as from fear and lack of awareness are easily picked up by other
children who further alienate other learners. Disturbances that arise from personal
backgrounds such as abuse and family problems have a great effect on students. They
become emotionally damaged and have a hard time concentrating in school. As a mentor, it
should be our responsibility to identify if the pupil is having a hard time at home or school.
The lack of support structure could lead to the student dropping out of school. Dropouts
have a hard time dealing with problems in life and manifest their behaviour to become self-
destructive. These pupils turn to alcohol and drugs from a young age. The effects of drugs
make it easier for a person to run into social issues such as violence. The child will be a
danger to themselves as well as to others.
Inappropriate teacher roles could create a critical barrier in the learning process. The
promotion of mental and physical health to all learners will help them become aware of
how they can improve the learning process.
