PREPARATION FOR THE EXAM

The section below is a practical guideline which you can consider during your preparation for the
exam.

PRACTICAL EXAM PREPARATION

5 - 8 Weeks Before

Around five to eight weeks before exams is a good a time to draw up a detailed revision timetable.
This will replace your usual timetable or study program.

You need to:
• give time to each subject which has an exam, at least 8-10 hours each week
• organise your time by the sections you need to cover
• plan to study when you are most alert
• give extra time to subjects or sections you find difficult
• revise work during this final revision time
• take time off to relax
• use useful study techniques

MONITORING YOUR PLAN
• Check your plan regularly to see how well you are doing.
• You may need to amend your plan e.g. If something unexpected happens or if some revision
takes longer than expected.

FOCUS ON CONCEPTS
• Most of the students do not focus enough on frameworks.
• If you do not focus on frameworks, you will not be able to understand the interrelationship
within and across the auditing standards.

MOCK EXAMS
• At least 10 days before the exam conduct real time mock examinations.
• Simulate exam conditions.
• Assess yourself.
• Identifying weaknesses.
• Work on weaknesses.
• Do not just go through the solutions.

SELF ASSESSMENT

Appraisal of performance is best directed by responding to five questions relating to the
marks gained.
• What was your total mark?
• How many marks were lost because you did not understand the theory?
• How many marks did you lose as a result of simple errors in your responses?
• How many marks were lost because you could not interpret the question or you did not
answer what was asked?
• How many marks were lost because you ran out of time?

Think positively - If I put in the work, I will succeed!
• Work through past exam papers and tests.
• Work with a study partner or group.
• Find out the exam location and organise transport.
• Organise exam equipment e.g. ID card, paper, pens, calculator, water, energy bar, etc.
• Look forward to the exam to show off your knowledge!
• Focus yourself positively for the whole exam experience.
• Visualise how you achieve success!

The night before
• If you have studied well, glance through your summaries/cards/flowcharts.
• Gather exam equipment - pens, ruler, ID card, calculator etc.
• Check transport arrangements.
• Use relaxation/stress management techniques.
• Have adequate sleep.

The day of the exam
• Eat a good breakfast. (Remember to take snacks and drinks with you.)
• Check your exam equipment, especially ID cards and calculators
• Arrive 20-30 minutes early.
• If possible, choose your favourite position in the exam room.
• Take deep breaths, think positively. Synchronise your watch with the clock in the exam room.
• Do not discuss the subject to be written with fellow students prior to writing the exam.

During the exam
• Calculate the time available for each question.
• Start every question by reading through the required first.
• Plant your answers properly.
• Start each question on a new page, as well as every sub-section.
• Write legibly and double-space your writing - examiners like this!
• If calculations are required, include working and define variables.
• Keep to the time limit for each question.
• Mental block? - relax, breathe deeply, and talk positively to yourself.
• Stop briefly after each question/set of questions and take a short break to relax, stretch, or
have a snack.

After the exam
• Avoid exam post mortems.
• Plan to spend time unwinding.
• Remind yourself there is more to life than exams.
• You are a person beyond your mark!
• Review your schedule for the next exam!
