CDE3701 – Child Development (0-9)

Mechela Van Der Vent

QUESTION 1

1.1 Risk factors that may have an impact on children's development in their early years include Poverty,
Health-problems, Physical abuse and stress.

1.2

1.2.1 The positive effects that learners may experience due to teachers creating a protective teaching
and learning environment in the classroom is access to a safe environment that includes quality learning
opportunities.

1.2.2 The positive effects that learners may experience due to teachers creating a protective teaching
and learning environment on the playground include a clean environment free of pollutants, or
hazardous material or surroundings.

1.3 Dear Parents

Protective Factors are what we consider essential for the happiness and growth of our children. Below I
have stipulated a few factors that we as educators and parents need to make sure is emphasised in the
lives of our children.

Starting at the base we should talk about the personal characteristics of the children themselves. I
always found that instilling Faith and a sense of meaning in life is always a good place to start when it
comes to building the character of a child. Children should all gain the ability to consider situations from
another person’s perspective, ever heard the term ‘putting yourself in someone else's shoes?’. Children
all need a sense of self-efficacy and a positive self-esteem so that they can gain a sense of control over
their own lives’.

We all know our families play a huge role in who we become as adults. Therefore, it is important that we
model a positive family climate with low levels of parental conflict. Another key factor in being
surrounded with family are good sibling relationships as well as close relationships with
parents/caregivers. What I find most important in the road to a healthy family life is plain down Faith
and religious affiliation.

As much as our family and our attitudes shape us into well us. Our community moulds our characters in
which we gain our street smarts. The number one charter in the lives of a young child is being exposed
to a low level of community violence therefore children need to live in a safe neighbourhood. Keeping
children integrated into the community can be accomplished by after-school Programmes. Lastly, we as
caretakers, teachers, parents, adults need to have protective child policies (regarding child labour,
health care, and welfare) to make sure our kids stay safe.

Yours Faithfully,

Teacher Mechaela (Grade 3)

QUESTION 2

2.1 Having a positive sense of belonging in the classroom is a way for you as the teacher to navigate a
happy and healthy school experience for all learners. A culture of learning is all about creating long
lasting relationships that are all based on respect and trust. As a teacher it can be quite a task to build a
supportive environment that allows learners to feel comfortable enough to open up to peers and you as
a teacher. A sense of belonging can help children develop a moral compas that they can gradually pass
onto each other as they begin treating each other with love and respect. It all starts with embracing
each other for who we are.

2.2 The importance of children having a sense of belonging in their early years.

The importance of a sense of belonging makes us feel like we are not alone. A sense of belonging has a
positive impact on our intellectual levels, social skills, mental health, and academic performance. When
a sense of belonging is there, children throw themselves into the learning environment and when that
sense of belonging is not there, children will feel alienated and will step back from engaging. In the
classroom the teacher can use cultural responsive teaching aims to address isolation and non-
acceptance encouraging learners to take ownership of their cultural heritage. Creating a supportive and
caring learning environment will give learners the strength and confidence they need to speak up in the
classroom and participate. Setting ambitious standards for your learners will make them feel like you
believe in their abilities and their willingness to be a part of the classroom. Being accommodative of
every learner will make learners feel like you care about them. Embracing the uniqueness of learners
will not only give them a sense of belonging but it will make them willing to learn, willing to be a part of
the classroom and willing to go the extra mile for their teacher and classmates. Actively challenging
stereotypes in the classroom will give learners the mindset to be accepting of each other. In the
classroom get to know your learners, their names, likes and dislikes. This will make them feel accepted
and recognised. A sense of belonging happens when learners can freely express themselves and their
feelings and opinions without fear of judgement.
