Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.
I have read though the contents of unit one and the table of contents, I have
evaluated the course work and found the following.
The book is clearly structured and will be appropriate to use for a more advanced
class. There seems to be enough practice activities, but I think there can be a bit
less pair work and more individual activities to evaluate if each student really
understand the target language, it is more difficult in pair and group work to
evaluate each students progress., although some activities could probably be
adapted to use as individual activities. All the activities in the course book will
develop the students language skills and promote using the language often as
there are many activities for them to do. The course book does provide a balance
between reading, writing, listening and speaking, which is necessary; each part
should be covered and given attention to. The activities seem to get more difficult
as the course work continues. This is a good way to test the students knowledge
and evaluate what they know and what they need more help and or practice with.
I do find the pages to be a bit too cluttered and the text is a bit difficult to read
which should be avoided in English course books. This course book will be
appropriate for a more advanced class in terms of the language that is taught and
the activities that is presented. There is a good variety of activities for the students
which will allow them to practice the target language enough. The content is
culturally appropriate and won’t be offensive to anyone of any culture, it represents
global living so you will be able to use the book for any culture you are teaching to.
The visual representations is well presented and make it easy to quickly find the
most important facts of the reading texts, this is good for skimming and scanning
activities for the students, it can save some time for students that find it difficult to
not read every word of all the sentences.
