Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to gain insight into one of two
important themes in this module: the impact of the mineral revolution in the 19th
century and war in southern Africa in the last two decades of the 19th century. The
assignment consists of two essay questions that touch on those two themes. For this
assignment you are required to answer one of the essay questions drawn from the
aforementioned themes and submit your essay answer for the assessment.
Assignment guidelines
• You are only required to make use of Study Units 5 and 6 to complete this
assignment
• You are encouraged to consult other books, articles and internet sources (the
use of Wikipedia and sources intended for school pupils, are not encouraged).
The more sources you locate, read and understand, the better your work is
likely to be
• The essay answer should be approximately 5-6 pages in length, or roughly
1500 to 1800 words
• Study Tutorial Letter 301 which provides guidelines for the writing of history
essays
• Express your ideas and the content that you have consulted in your own
words

• Remember to acknowledge your sources in footnotes, especially if you use
direct quotations. Consult Tutorial Letter 301 on how to compile footnotes

is clearly expressed, and it is neat and legible

Discuss the significance of the discovery of rich resources of diamonds and gold in
