An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
 Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
 You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
 This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
 Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
 You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
 Write 300 - 500 words.


This essay is intended to provide a general evaluation of one of the units in the course book called ‘ New
Cutting Edge Advanced Level ‘ as well as determine its usability as a material for teaching English to
advanced L2 ESL learners.

New Cutting Edge Advanced Level is an excellent and pertinent choice as it meets the criteria &
encompasses most of the components that is required when selecting a good course book. At first glance,
the course book’s content page is divided into units dedicated to a wide range of contemporary topics such
as global living, emotion, money etc. that learners can identify and resonate with as well as find interesting
and stimulating.

With reference to the sample unit, the material is logically structured and appropriately graded for L2 ESL
learners proficient at a C1-C2 level. The theme of the unit i.e. globalisation and urbanization; is highly
suitable for the age and experience of the target class. There is also no possibility that the theme of the unit
would be offensive to anyone’s culture as the topics chosen are objective and impersonal. The topic of
globalisation affects every individual around the world so it is easily a topic that a diverse group of learners
would feel comfortable learning. The unit also presents a good balance of all four skills (listening, speaking,
writing, and reading) and language areas (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation) across a range of
relevant topics. There are also ample exercises to allow consolidation of the language areas.

The task based approach in this course book also makes it both user-friendly and learner centred. The
variety of relevant and interesting exercises for individual and interpersonal practice is well balanced and
focuses learners on the enhancement of their receptive and productive skills.

The design of the material is also attractive and clearly presented. The layout as well as the appropriately
selected images is colourful, cleverly placed and sequenced in a progressive order. The different forms of
cultural and ethnic reference in the material encourage learners from various backgrounds and origins to
be engaged with the material resulting in learners being interested and actively participating within the
lesson.
