Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes

Apprentice Name; yosef biyabiyen
Company; TVS
Introduction
As a young university student having a work placement medium sized
engineering company called TVS Automotive which manufactures different car
body parts. I have assigned by my owner to this placement to gain a
knowledgeable experience and a good understanding about operate
machinery to carry out secondary machining processes. As a part of this
project to achieve what I aimed I must work on different areas. I have asked to
produce a report that investigate three different traditional secondary
machining process and three different specialist secondary machining
processes.

These are the questions I need to answer

Research and produce a report that:

a) investigates three different traditional secondary machining processes.

b) investigates three different specialist secondary machining processes: and

c) considers sustainability (energy consumption, disposal of fluids and waste
material) issues for all the six secondary machining processes chosen.

Manufacturing processes
Manufacturing processes can be broadly divided into two groups, and they are
primary manufacturing processes and secondary manufacturing processes. The
former ones provide basic shape and size to the material as per the designer’s
requirement. Casting, forming, powder metallurgy are such processes to name
a few. Secondary manufacturing processes provide the final shape and size
with tighter control on the dimension, surface characteristics, etc. Material
removal processes are mainly secondary manufacturing processes. Material
removal processes once again can be divided into mainly two groups, and they

, are “Conventional Machining Processes” and “Non-Traditional Manufacturing
Processes”.

what Is Machining?
Machining is a subtractive manufacturing process that gradually cuts or
removes material to form a final design. Manufacturers can customize the
design of machined components to have unique shapes and sizes by
controlling what portions of the raw material, or workpiece, are removed.
Machining is a broad category that includes many different processes.

a) investigates three different traditional secondary machining
processes.

1, Conventional or traditional machining
A conventional machining process is one in which the machining is done using
the traditional way, that is, without the use of any sophisticated methods. As a
result, this machining method is also known as traditional machining. Sharp
point cutting tools, such as the taper tool in the lathe machine for tapering, are
employed in this technique for machining. The following are the types of
conventional machining processes:

1.1 Turning Machine
The horizontal metal-turning machine,
often known as an engine lathe, is the
most significant of all machine tools.
Many of its core mechanical principles
are included in the design of other
machine tools, making it the father of
all other machine tools. The engine
lathe is a simple machine tool that can
be used for a range of operations
including turning, facing, and drilling. It
turns and bores with a single point cutting tool. Turning procedures include
turning straight or tapered cylindrical shapes, grooves, shoulders, and screw
threads, as well as facing flat surfaces on the ends of cylindrical pieces, and
entail cutting extra metal from the exterior diameter of a workpiece in the
