,The first stanza describes the life of the grandmother: how she lived
in wide open spaces, there was an orchard full of trees, she read books
to gain knowledge and they had to phone the switchboard operator to
talk to each other.
Stanza two describes the life of the mother: she lives in the city in a
suburb with a garden with 2 trees, she watches television and goes to
the movies, she is very proud that she knows somebody who’s been
overseas! And just before she was in Matric, she saw the first cellphone.
The last stanza describes the life of the speaker, the daughter. Her tree
is Gumtree, she chats quietly on internet, she uses Facebook and she
can access any information by using her computer and the internet all
from her room. The more knowledge is available to her, the less her
need for personal interaction becomes.
