2.1 Assessment criteria
It is important to acquire knowledge to be able to reflect critically on contemporary issues and
problems in education and on your own teaching practice in the classroom.
Therefore, assessment in this module will focus on your ability to
• interpret historical and theoretical sources relating to education provision in South Africa
(and the Global South)
• interpret historical and theoretical sources relating to education provision in South Africa
• interpret historical and theoretical sources relating to education provision in South Africa
• engage critically with selected contemporary issues in education in local and international
contexts
• engage critically with selected contemporary issues in education in local and international
contexts for the purpose of research
Your achievement of these learning objectives will be assessed on the basis of the assessment
plan outlined in section 2.2.
2.2 Assessment plan
To be able to complete the assignments successfully, you have to read the prescribed book and
the wrap-around guide carefully, reflectively and systematically. Also, when you are preparing to
write up your assignments, do not neglect to go through the portfolio activities in the prescribed
book, the questions and feedback in the wrap-around guide and the self-study questions in this
