Introduction and aim
In this report, I will be demonstrating how technicians consistently use legislation to
maintain safety in organisations. With the aim being to ‘find out how the technicians
keep staff and pupils safe in school’.
We visited two organisations: Ark Isaac Newton Academy and south bank university.
I will be talking about each organisation in-depth about the safety they have and the
precautions that are taken in these organisations.
Descriptions of the main activities of the organisations
Ark Isaac newton academy -
The main purpose of the school is for the education they run GCSEs, A levels and
BTEC. They provide support for many students. They also have teaching assistants
for students with special needs or for students that may require additional support.
The school is also a training academy that develops future teachers whilst also
managing day to day admin tasks. There are always people that are at the front desk
and are there if any help is needed such as lost items, first aid enquiries and
directions etc. The school provides lunch and for some whose parents or carers can’t
afford to pay for the lunch free school meals are provided. In ks3 the school has a
variety of subjects that we do such as art, music, pe, drama, Spanish, French and
then the mandatory subjects such as science, English and maths. In ks5 they also
have a variety of options such as politics, history, English, BTEC applied science,
BTEC business etc. de3
Ark Isaac newton academy relies on technicians to help maintain the safety of each
student and teacher during science experiments
- Making sure they have all the equipment necessary for the practical
- Making sure it works and preparing solutions etc
- Testing the experiments before the students and making sure it's safe and to
review the outcome.
London south bank-
London south bank university has a large range of courses, they have over 148
courses. They have a lot of facilities to help with the courses. They have laboratory
experiments that are facilitated by technical support services. They have higher
education and have much more facilities.
Comparison
London south bank university has a much higher education than ark Isaac newton
academy. LSBU has more equipment and facilities than ark does. Isaac Newton
Academy has more support than LSBU because in the uni you are more
independent and have to push yourself more whereas in Isaac they have a strict
timetable where you can't just leave.

How the health and safety measures in the scientific organisation comply with
legislation and how the management of how H&S comply with legislation-
Health and safety act 1974
The health and safety act is the primary piece of legislation that a place of
employment has to follow, it is the employer's duty towards keeping its
employees safe.
At Ark isaac newton academy under the legislation the teachers have to follow
the health and safety policies and procedure they have to have training.
Additionally at Ark Isaac Newton Academy the technicians have to check the
equipment before preparing experiments to ensure safety is considered.
LSBU have to report accidents and unsafe circumstances so next time they
can be aware. Additionally LSBU the staff have to take care of themselves
and others' safety. All technicians and teachers must be fully qualified before
helping children with practicals to ensure safety.
Comparison
The training and procedures are quite similar in both ark isaac newton
academy and LSBU and get taught the same training however in LSBU the
training is more advanced as there laboratory and experiments have higher
risks. This means that staff and students have to be more careful.
COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
When dealing with specified substances and materials, COSHH is the law that
mandates employers to regulate hazardous substances.COSHH was
introduced to control the exposure of businesses. (“What is COSHH?

At isaac newton academy we provide each student with helpful information
for risk assessment to prevent any harm to health for example if an acid spills
it can be considered a burn hazard. If the person gets the acid in their eye
there is a high risk. To prevent this from happening you are told to wear
goggles. For both teachers and students. The school has first aid in most
science labs, not all.
At LSBU technicians must only be used until a risk assessment and COSHH
forms have to be completed. If spillages occur and there is contact with the
chemicals on your skin you would immediately rinse your hand using the
safety showers that are installed.

Both at Ark isaac newton academy and LSBU have to have a risk assessment
in preparation for the practical. Both organisations have to follow the COSHH
protocols to prevent any hazardous substances to your body. However at
