1.1 ‘Having resilience means that you will never be negatively impacted by
adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or stress’

1.1.2 Having resilience help learners when they encounter difficulties such as dealing
with difficult subjects, friendships and different opinions. Children or learners exhibit
positive behavioural adaptation when they encounter significant adversity trauma,
tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress.

1.2 What steps are necessary to become a health-promoting school?

(1) Introduce the concept to the school.
(2) Carry out a needs assessment. Analyse the causes of problems and prioritise the
needs.

(4) Draw up a plan of action based on priorities and resources, and implement the
plan.
(5) Monitor and evaluate the process.

1.3 Discuss how the teacher counsellor can improve the effectiveness of

2.1 Using the South African Schools Act (No. 84 of 1996) as a frame of reference,
outline why the learner’s regular absence from school is problematic. (2)

Learner absenteeism is one of the major precursors to poor academic performance. If
learners miss school, they do not learn and ultimately they fail
or drop-out. Notwithstanding, this problem does not receive the attention it deserves.

2.2 The response of the principal in suspending the learner for fighting was not
the correct process to follow. What process should have been followed? (3)

The expulsion should have been appealed through the provincial Department of
Education instead of the principle taking matters into their own hands and expelling
the learner. The Head of Department will then have to make necessary alternative
arrangement for the learner to be placed at another public school.

2.3 What role could the following members of the school-based support team
(SBST) play in supporting the learner, the teacher(s) and the family? (3)

⚫ Respond to teachers’ requests for assistance with support plans for learners
experiencing barriers to learning.
⚫ Review teacher-developed support plans, gather any additional information
required, and provide direction and support in the form of additional strategies,
programmes, services and resources to strengthen the ISP.
⚫ Request assistance, where necessary, from the DBST to enhance ISPs or support a
recommendation for the placement of a learner in a specialised setting.

2.4 The school does not have an anti-bullying policy to assist with this situation.
