TRL3705 ASSIGNMENT 2
SEMESTER 2 2023
DATE : 11 AUGUST 2023
WRITE YOU OWN INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSION
1) Discuss the challenges faced by freight rail transport in Africa and illustrate by means
of practical example where possible.
Africa's primary mode of transportation is still freight rail. However, the industry is confronted
with numerous obstacles that impede its expansion and effectiveness. These obstacles include,
among others, inadequate project financing, bureaucratic obstacles, and inadequate
infrastructure.
Inadequate infrastructure is one of the main obstacles to freight rail transport in Africa.
Numerous nations still have railway systems that are out of date and poorly maintained, despite
significant investments in the sector. As a result, there are more breakdowns, delays, and
derailments on a regular basis, which ultimately results in lower profitability, lower efficiency,
and higher operating costs. The absence of cutting-edge technological systems and equipment
that could enhance rail service delivery only serves to exacerbate this predicament.
Obstacles in the bureaucracy, which frequently cause delays and inefficiencies, are another
significant obstacle. The lengthy and complicated administrative procedures that rail transport
companies often face can significantly slow down the movement of goods. Along with
import/export regulations and documentation, cumbersome customs and clearance procedures
can also impede smooth rail transportation in Africa.
