ASSIGNMENT NUMBER: 03

DUE DATE: 5 SEPTEMBER 2023

This essay is based on an online news article titled, UP in smoke! Police bust dagga

worth millions this weekend, written by Rorisang Kgosana, published on the 4th of

September 2022. It reports the crime investigation of an organised crime drug

operations conducted in the western cape and Kwazulu Natal province. The scope of

this essay rests on analysing the structure, audience, tone and style of text used by the

author to achieve his/her purpose.

The purpose of the article is to report and inform South Africans on the successful

outcome of the south African police investigation and apprehension of two organised

drug operations. It is an article structured in a form of a build-up of anticipation,

, apparent by the use of emotive language in the title. the inclusion a punctuation, more

specifically an exclamation mark, in the title "UP in smoke!" stands to not only draw the

close attention of the reader but also evoke thoughts and feelings connected with

destruction, by extending the emphasis of the word smoke which is generally

associated with fire, as such, creating anticipation for an action packed narration of

events. it creates expectation for a harsh/tough actions the police have taken to bring an

end to criminality.

The title suggests and/or carries a negative tone, evoking feeling of fear towards the

wrath imposed by the policing authority. Such emotive language is noticeable

throughout the article with the use of words such as "busted'', ''eradicated'',

''descended'' and ''chased'', which can be associated with the fierce execution of force

and violence. However, having noted the negative connotations relative to the use of

these words, the interpretation of the same words could invoke differing emotions to its

respective audience. It may be conceived to carry a terrifying massage and warning to

criminals, that they are not to be spared if caught in illegal activities and contrary to the

general public, could stand to affirm the positive actions taken by the police to deal with

crime, as such, invoke feelings of hope and happiness, with these actions directed at

ensuring their safety.

The fact that the article is published online cast a rather wider audience and presents a

benefit of access to all kinds of people throughout the world with access to the internet,

bringing the potential to be shared in different social media platforms, thus extending

access to even more people of all ages interested in following the events unfolding in

the country. Its design caters for both direct and indirect audience. the immediate and
