Children must have enough food and the correct food to be able to develop to their full potential. Due to Nelson not receiving sufficient nutrition through the food he eats; he has lowered immunity and he has a higher risk of contracting infectious diseases. Nelson has the symptoms of malnutrition which can also be from a lack of childcare knowledge; it is possible that his parents were not ready to have a child and as a result Nelson is uncared for. His teeth are decaying, his skin is dry, and he is always tired. The parents may not be telling Nelson how to care for his body due to lack of childcare knowledge. It is evident that Nelson is not aware of an early bedtime routine, he does not brush his teeth, and he does not take care of his skin by moisturizing. Nelson may also be skipping so much school because he is feeling nervous and insecure due to his family’s home situation; he may feel that he will be judged at school because he ‘looks’ different (in this case neglected and untidy). 1.2 Food that Nelson will need for growing and for staying healthy: Carbohydrates: Potatoes Fruit and vegetables: Citrus fruit i.e. oranges Dairy: Milk Proteins: Fish Fats and oils: Avocado 1.3 Nelson’s emotions and intellect are likely to have been affected by his current state: Nelson will be much smaller than his peers due to stunted growth from being malnourished. This may result in that he cannot participate in activities i.e., physical education and after school sport, for as long as his peers can and at the level that they can. He may also battle to make it into sporting teams; this will result in a loss of self-confidence, and he will feel very left out and alone. Not getting sufficient nutrition from the food Nelson eats results in fatigue and poor concentration. This makes it almost impossible for him to focus during class and it is affecting his academic level, resulting in him falling behind and again feeling left out and alone. Nelson’s attendance to school is affected because he is often sick. This is due to him being a target for germs because he has a lower immunity than most healthy children. This affects his academic ability (intellect) in the long run because he misses too much work.
