The Asante Kingdom, also known as the Ashanti Empire, was a powerful andsophisticated
precolonial society in West Africa, in what is now modern-day Ghana. The Asante people had a
well-structured and hierarchical social organization.
The Asante Kingdom was led by a powerful king (Asantehene), who held significant political and
religious authority. Under the king, there were various officials, nobles, and administrators who
assisted in governance. The society wasorganized into clans and families, each with its
responsibilities and obligations.
The economy of the Asante Kingdom was largely based on agriculture, with cropslike yams,
plantains, and cocoa being significant. They also engaged in trade, particularly in gold, which was
abundant in the region and played a crucial role intheir interactions with other societies, including
European traders.
