SEMESTER 1
, ENG1515
ASSESSMENT 1
UNITS 1 & 2
Due date: 02 April 2024
Question 1
1.1 In Unit 1 of this module, you are introduced to a number of key concepts that you
need to understand in order to be an effective teacher of English as a home
language. Reread the Unit and do the following regarding the concepts listed below:
Intelligibility; one-size-fits-all-approach
1.1.1 In your own words, explain what you understand about each of these
concepts.
The unit seems to cover various aspects of language learning and teaching, including
historical context, language analysis, language development theories, and practical
strategies for teaching English in multilingual classrooms.
Unit 1 introduces key concepts such as intelligibility and the one-size-fits-all approach.
Intelligibility refers to the clarity and comprehensibility of language, which is crucial for
effective communication. In a multilingual classroom, where students may have diverse
language backgrounds, ensuring intelligibility is important to facilitate understanding and
learning.
The one-size-fits-all approach refers to a standardized or uniform method of teaching that
does not consider individual differences among students. In a multilingual classroom, where
students may have different proficiency levels, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds,
using a one-size-fits-all approach can be problematic because it may not meet the diverse
needs of students. Teachers need to adapt their teaching methods and materials to
accommodate the varying needs and abilities of their students.
My understanding, the unit seems to provide a comprehensive overview of language
teaching principles and practical strategies for teaching English effectively in diverse
educational contexts.
1.1.2 Why is intelligibility important when teaching English in a multilingual
classroom?
Facilitating Understanding: In a multilingual classroom, students come from diverse
linguistic backgrounds. Intelligibility ensures that communication is clear and
understandable to all students, regardless of their native language. It helps students
comprehend the material being taught and fosters effective communication among peers
and between students and teachers.
Encouraging Participation: When students can understand the language being used in
the classroom, they are more likely to actively participate in discussions, ask questions, and
engage with the learning materials. Intelligibility creates an inclusive learning environment
where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves and contributing to class
activities.
