Study Unit 1: The Asante Kingdom - Organization:
The Asante Kingdom, also known as the Ashanti Empire, was a powerful and
sophisticated precolonial society in West Africa, in what is now modern-day
Ghana. The Asante people had a well-structured and hierarchical social
organization.
The Asante Kingdom was led by a powerful king (Asantehene), who held
significant political and religious authority. Under the king, there were various
officials, nobles, and administrators who assisted in governance. The society was
organized into clans and families, each with its responsibilities and obligations.

The economy of the Asante Kingdom was largely based on agriculture, with crops
like yams, plantains, and cocoa being significant. They also engaged in trade,
particularly in gold, which was abundant in the region and played a crucial role in
their interactions with other societies, including European traders.
