ACTIVITY 5: PROFESSIONAL LETTERS

There are various ways of communicating with parents.

Letter 1

Write a sample letter addressed to the parents of the school where you are doing your teaching
practice. In your letter, communicate the importance of mathematics and share ideas of how the
parents can encourage their children to do various mathematic activities at home. Make sure
your letter is professional. Your letter must include the following elements: the name of the
school, the date, a formal greeting, a heading (i.e., the topic), content (i.e., the body of the letter)
and an ending.
Your letter may not exceed one A4 page.

Letter 2

Write a sample letter addressed to the parents in which you request their assistance with a
class project. You are planning a fun day, which will be held at the school. In your letter, give all
the details of the event, what you intend doing during the fun day and where their child is going
to be involved. Provide a programme for the day, too. Use only one A4 page for the letter and
one A4 page for the programme.

Dear [Parents’ Name],

I hope this letter finds you well and that your child is enjoying their learning experience at
[School Name]. As a teacher trainee doing my teaching practice at your school, I would like to
share with you the importance of mathematics in our daily lives and provide some ideas for
encouraging your child to do various mathematic activities at home.

Mathematics is a fundamental skill that underpins many areas of life, including science,
technology, engineering, and business. It allows us to solve problems, think critically, and
make informed decisions. Moreover, mathematics is an essential component of everyday life,
from budgeting to recipe conversions, and we constantly use math whether we realize it or
not.

As a parent, you can help your child develop their mathematical skills and confidence by
integrating various math activities into their daily lives. Here are some ideas that you can try at
home:

 Encourage your child to help with cooking and baking. Measuring ingredients and
setting the oven temperature require precise measurements and mathematical
calculations.
 Play math games with your child, such as card games, board games, or puzzles. This
will help your child develop problem-solving skills while having fun.
 Practice math skills while running errands. For example, ask your child to calculate the
change when you make a purchase at the store or count the number of items in your
shopping cart.
 Use real-world examples to teach mathematical concepts. For instance, use a clock to
teach time or use cut fruits to teach fractions.
 Use educational apps and websites to provide additional mathematical exercises to
enhance their learning.

I hope these suggestions will inspire you to support your child's mathematical learning and
development. By making math fun and practical, you can help your child develop an
appreciation for mathematics and a solid understanding of the subject.

Thank you for your attention, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further
questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
