PREVIEW
In Lorraine Hansberry's play, A Raisin in the Sun,
there are instances where women are depicted as
the disempowered gender, reinforcing traditional
gender roles and societal expectations. Walter's
remark, "We one group of men tied to a race of
women with small minds," reflects the prevailing
mindset that men are superior and women are
limited in their intellect and capabilities. One
example of women's disempowerment can be
seen through the character of Ruth, Walter's wife.
Ruth is expected to fulfill the role of a dutiful wife
and mother, but her aspirations and desires are
often overlooked. She is constantly burdened with
household responsibilities and the challenges of
raising a child, which restrict her personal growth.
For instance, when Ruth discovers that she is
pregnant, she contemplates having an abortion
due to the difficult circumstances the family faces.
