Organelle Interaction
Protein Synthesis
1. Gene in chromosome in nucleus is transcribed to mRNA
2. mRNA leaves through nuclear pores and attaches to ribosome
3. Ribosomes translate mRNA to code for a protein
4. Protein passes through cisternae of rough ER
5. Microtubules pinch off vesicles containing protein and (along with motor proteins)
transport them to the Golgi apparatus
6. Vesicles fuse with Golgi where post-translational modification occurs
7. Microtubules pinch off vesicles containing proteins and (along with motor proteins)
transport them to the cell membrane
8. Vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane and are engulfed by it
9. Membrane opens to release the protein outside the cell
Stages 8 and 9 are the process of exocytosis
Secretion = useful products from the cell
Excretion = harmful or waste products from the cell
