Describe how to rig a mainsail in 7+ steps. - Answer- 1. Before you put on your mainsail, make sure your stays are fasten and tight to prevent any movement of the mast while on water. 2. Once you have finished rigging and tightening the jib, Feed the foot into the groove in the boom, clew corner first. 3. Unroll the sail and check for battens. 4. Attach the tack, then the clew, and finish with the head. 5. Loosen the mainsheet and boomvang. 6. Raise the sail up the mast 6-12 inches and secure until you are ready to raise the sails and go sailing. 7. When you are ready to go sailing, raise the sail up to the top of the mast and cleat the main halyard. DO NOT cleet the mainsheet or your boat will catch the wind and tip over. What force on a sail causes a sailboat to move? Does wind direction or sailing position change that force? - Answer- Push mode (downwind): with the wind coming from behind, the sail and boat are simply pushed forward through the water. Pull mode (upwind): your sail is shaped to bend with the wind as it flows by, creating higher pressure on the inside of the sail and lower pressure on the outside creating lift. Describe how you would teach a student to sail close-hauled rather than on a reach. What are significant factors which indicate that a sailor is staying close-hauled? - Answer- Being close hauled is being closest to the wind while sailing. Sailing in the groove will help make the best speed and achieve the highest pointing angle towards the wind. A boat can be sailed on the low side of the close hauled course, almost down to a close reach position. What are the significant differences between tacking and jibing? What should students do differently when tacking or jibing? - Answer- Tacking you push the tiller away from you. Jibing the tiller is pulled towards you. What are the 3 most important ingredients to a successful mooring landing? - Answer- 1. Plan your approach. 2. Have an escape route if the landing is not going well. 3. Sail in slowly when you are ready. Describe the basic right-of-way rules. What is an effective way of teaching beginning students to avoid collisions? - Answer- 1. Port-tack boat gives way to the starboard-tack boat. 2. Windward boat gives way to the leeward boat on the same tack. 3. Overtaking boat gives way to the vessel ahead. 4. Recreational powerboats gives way to sailboats. Alter course and avoid collision that could potentially damage one or both boats and risk injury. Be a defensive sailor.
