, Question 1

1.1) The property that is illustrated is the commutative property of addition. It is
shown by the equation 187 + 376 = 376 + 187. This property shows that the
order of the numbers has no effect on the result when adding two numbers. In
other words, you may add the numbers in any sequence and get the same
result.

For example, in the above equation, we can add 187 and 376 first, or 376 and
187 first. The sum will be the same regardless of the order, which is 563.

This property is similar to rearranging items. The commutative property allows
you to rearrange two groups of numbers without changing the sum of the two
numbers. This property only holds true to addition, not subtraction or division.

1.2) A step-by-step approach on how to teach the difference between place value
and the value of a digit to intermediate phase mathematics learners:

1. Introduce the topic:
-Begin by explaining that in our number system, each digit has a different
value based on its position.
-Highlight the importance of knowing place value while dealing with numbers.
-Define "place value" and "value of a digit" and explain how they are related
but different ideas.

2. Define what is place value:
- Place value is the value given to a digit based on its place in a number.
- Break down the idea using the number 369 as an example:
- Because the number 3 is in the hundreds place, its place value is 300.
- Because the number 6 is in the tens place, its place value is 60.
- Because the digit 9 is in the ones place, it has a place value of 9.

3. Define the meaning of value of a digit:
- The value of a digit refers to the quantity or worth of that digit in a given
number.
- Use the same example number 256:
- The digit 2 has a value of 200, as it represents two hundreds.
- The digit 5 has a value of 50, representing five tens.
- The digit 6 has a value of 6, representing six ones or units.

4. Compare place value and value of a digit:
- Establish a difference between the two concepts:
- Place value has to do with the location of a digit in a number.
- A digit's value is the actual amount it represents at that place.
